inappropriate appropriation
Christopher Lane is presenting a new series of paintings, in which he refers to works by other artists. He takes up the so-called painters fleece made from recycled material that Mari Otberg spreads out on her work table when painting in the Zacherlfabrik every summer. Its appearance is always grayish-purple. As Otberg applies a lot of pink, this complements the painter's fleece as in Martha Jungwirth's work. Similar "by-products" are known form Damien Hirst – polka dot paintings that he sells in print editions.
Since 2000, his artistic practice has been dedicated to working with various indicator plant dyes that transform on the paper while still wet. This allows Lane to create color effects that cannot be achieved with conventional watercolor or various opaque techniques.
studied economics at WU and architecture at TU Vienna. Working in the field of architecture for many years, he has been running Galerie Breyer in Baden since 2020 and is actively involved in exhibitions throughout Austria.
